This port city is located in the east coast of Sri Lanka, the city is situated 257Km away from Colombo; it is surrounded by lagoons, hills and bays. Trincomalee is the fifth largest natural harbour in the world and the city gains prominence as a town built on a peninsula. The long wide beaches that spread across the area offer its visitors white sandy beaches and calm azure waters, inviting its guests to immerse themselves in the water, to go snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing. This port city has a history worth exploring, the strategic location of the natural harbour made it a city worthwhile conquering, and hence it was conquered by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Trincomalee is fondly referred to as Trinco by the locals, the anglicized Tamil word 'Trincomalee' denotes the meaning lord of the sacred hill.
