A visit to the Colonial buildings at FortA visit to Colombo Fort would enable one to identify the consequences of the past colonial rule. Many of the buildings are influenced by Dutch, Portuguese and British architecture that dates as far back as the 1700's. It was the Portuguese that initiated building the fort, which was thereafter expanded by the Dutch. The British demolished the ramparts to start developing the city. Currently the oldest buildings that prevail were built during the Dutch period The Dutch hospital (currently Fort Police station), the Colombo Dutch museum and Wolvendaal church. The British influence in architecture can be experienced by visiting the Presidential Secretariat, Cargills and Millers complex, Grand Oriental Hotel, the Lighthouse clock tower, General Post Office building and Lloyd's building.
