Traditional Maldivian Fishing CruiseThe fishing industry in Maldives is the main contributor to the Maldivian economy; visitors to the islands could try their hand at fishing the traditional way. The traditional method of fishing is called the pole and line method a feathered barb-less hook on a line is attached to 15 foot Bamboo or plastic construction pole. Anglers could catch fish weighing up to 50 pounds using this technique.
The monsoon season is considered the best time to go fishing in the Maldives, although fishing is an all year around activity one could get a better catch during mid June to July. Traditionally the Maldivians follow two seasons the Iruvai Season and the Hulhangu season. If fishing takes patience and skill the traditional Maldivian method of fishing will test one’s level of patience.
