Royal Botanical Gardens

Six Km southwest of Kandy, lie the magnificent and sprawling expanses of the Royal Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, another extremely popular excursion among tourists. Huge tropical trees and a large variety of decorative plants and other creepers among 4000 species of plants are found within its grounds. The orchid house is certainly a centre-piece. There are more than three hundred varieties of superb orchids blooming in profusion. The spice garden in the park has trees and plants used for preparing traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The magnificence of the garden is heightened by the Mahaweli River which flows through its outer edge.

Once the pleasure gardens of a Kandyan Queen, this 59 hectare land is a beautiful park with numerous tropical foliage; the best in the island. The Commander of the allied forces in Southeast Asia, Earl Mountbatten, stationed his headquarters in the garden during the Second World War.

Access: 25 minute drive from Chaaya Citadel Kandy.
Location: 2 Km from the Peradeniya bridge, 6 Km from Kandy town.
