Temple of the Tooth

The stunning 17th-century Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of the Lord Buddha himself. This precious relic attracts white-clad pilgrims bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani every day.

The interiors of the building are richly carved and decorated with inlaid woods, ivory, marble and lacquer. The relic of the tooth is kept in a two-story inner shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks. The relic rests on a solid gold lotus flower, encased in a jewelled casket that sits on a throne.

Legend has it that the Tooth Relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka by a royal couple of India called prince Danta and Princess Hemamala. After a few centuries, the Tooth Relic became the symbol of power and authority among of the Sinhala Kings. The present Temple of the Tooth was constructed by King Sri Wimaladharma Suriya (1591 - 1604). Its famous Octagon (Paththiruppuwa) and outer walls were constructed by the last King of Kandy Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe. The king's palace is also in the temple compound.
