Clothing
Maldives is a tropical island and therefore visitors should pack light weight cotton clothing to keep their selves comfortable during the hot and humid summer days. T-shirts, cotton or linen shirts blouses, shorts and beach wear. If the purpose of visiting the Maldives is business then visitors should pack light weight formal wear.
Many resorts discourage visitors from entering their main restaurants in swim wear, although most resorts also offer alternate cuisine and beach-side cafes that would accommodate the same.
Mosquito/Insect repellent
Mosquitoes and insects are common phenomena when visiting a tropical island. Although in the resorts there is no real threat from pests it is advisable to carry repellent to repel the pests if the occasion calls for it.
Sunscreen & sunglasses
Sunscreen lotion is a must have when you travel to Maldives, the sun can become extremely harsh during the day time therefore sun worshippers must wear sunscreen lotion to ensure minimum damage to their skin. Sunglasses are essential especially when travelling by sea plane, speed boat or Dhoni as the sunlight reflects from the sea.
Visa
When entering the Maldives visitors do not need to apply for a visa prior to their arrival on the island
Visitors to the island are stamped a 30 day visa upon arrival; citizens of India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh are given a 90 day stamp.
If a visitor wishes to remain in the islands for a period exceeding 30 days then they must apply for an extension, in order to apply for an extension a visitor should have a valid international travel document, a valid return air ticket and sufficient funds to cover the rest of the stay. ( a minimum of US$30 per day) Applications for extension should be forwarded to Immigration Office located in the Huravee Building, Male'. This will cost a visitor 10 Rufiyas.
Travelling within the country
Speed boat is the most common mode of transportation in the Maldives, when travelling a distance that exceeds 10 Km it is advisable to opt for a speed boat.
There are a few ferry services that begin their journey from Male' and travel to the nearby islands
Sea planes are chartered to travel long distances, these sea plane transfers are made during the day offering its passengers magnificent views of the ocean
Taxis, cars and motorcycles are used in Male' and Addu as those are the only two islands with tarred roads.
In Maldives a service tax of 10% is added to almost all of the services offers.
However despite the service tax in resorts, you may like to tip staff, in which case an average tip would be about US$ 1 for small services such as that of a bell boy.
In the Maldives taxi drivers are not tipped.
Cultural hints
The consumption of alcohol is restricted to the resorts in Maldives; consuming alcohol anywhere else is illegal.
Visitors have to be decently dressed when in Male' and other inhabited islands
When entering a mosque visitors have to be dress modestly covering legs and the body
During the Raamazan festival many restaurants remain closed during the day
