There are two distinctive seasons in Sri Lanka; the dry and wet seasons. The south-western part of the island faces its wet season from May to August; the dry season begins in December and ends in March.

The wet season in the North and East lasts from October to January and during the months of May to September this region will go through its dry spell. Moreover during the inter monsoon period in October and November unexpected rains fall on many parts of the island.

The average temperature in the capital city of Colombo is 27°C, Kandy situated at an altitude of 465m maintains an average temperature of 20°C, Nuwaraeliya located at an altitude of 1868m maintains an average temperature of 16 °C and Trincomalee on the north east coast has an average of 32°C.

Sri Lanka has an all year round summer which is sometimes hindered by unexpected rain showers. However the ideal time to visit the west coast, the hill country and the south coast of Sri Lanka would be from December to March. If visitors are planning on visiting the cultural triangle and the east coast of Sri Lanka the perfect time would be from April to September.
